All his aliases describe with some precision to Edilberto García Alonso, a Cuban who at 76 years of natural age of El Junquito, province of Camaguey, who continues to show a real gift listening to the whispers of groundwater.

Edi, as his closest friends tell him, is a marker of wells that has become an endearing character of the City of Tinajones, because with his instrument of work, a galvanized wire of one and a half meters long, he places “with precision, In a land hit by drought, the place where the wells must be opened. ”
He tells us:
“When I was 23 years old, while watching a friend, on that occasion, those who imitated him could not locate the groundwater, but when they all left I tried and the wire became twisted in the same place, over and over again. Then I have marked more than 3 000 wells and I have never been wrong, I think that is why I am so well known.
I have never been charged for marking groundwater. My reward is the friendships and the greeting of the people in the street. What is unfortunate is that the well is opened, it is infertile, it is dry. Some people look for me because they think I’m the best, but they do not; There are other well markers in Camagüey. The popularity also depends on commitment and seriousness, because who wants to open a well is because it needs water and that situation has a ugly face. Every day people put me to the test and so far I have not let down any.
But there is no secret, the question I suppose is in my body and is a matter of pure physics. I am sensitive to the energy generated by running water. I perceive it through the “gossip”, which doubles as number eight in the same place; When that happens it’s because there’s water.
Many people even cross-refer when I’m doing my job. Those who know more about these phenomena have explained it to me and I try to transmit this knowledge, but some people do not understand it and I do not struggle with those criteria; do not bother me. Le dicen «El brujito del agua», «El adivinador», «El hombre magnético» o del «alambrito» y «El pocero de Camagüey». Todos sus alias describen con cierta precisión a Edilberto García Alonso, un cubano que a los 76 años de edad natural de El Junquito, provincia de Camaguey, y continúa haciendo gala de un auténtico don para escuchar los susurros del agua subterránea.
«Es un regalo que me dio la naturaleza y que agradezco. Mi vida no sería igual si no fuera por mi alambrito “chismoso”», bromea Edilberto, natural de El Junquito, localidad de Caracuna, en el municipio camagüeyano de Jimaguayú.
Edi, como le dicen sus amigos más cercanos, es un marcador de pozos que ha devenido personaje entrañable de la Ciudad de los Tinajones, pues con su instrumento de trabajo, un alambre galvanizado de un metro y medio de largo, ubica «con precisión, en una tierra azotada por fuertes sequías, el lugar donde deben abrirse los pozos».
El mismo nos comenta:
“Cuando tenía 23 años, mientras observaba a un amigo. En aquella ocasión, quienes lo imitaron no pudieron ubicar el agua subterránea, pero cuando todos se fueron lo intenté y el alambrito se me torció en el mismo lugar, una y otra vez. Desde entonces he marcado más de 3 000 pozos y nunca me he equivocado; creo que por eso soy tan conocido.
Nunca he cobrado por marcar agua subterránea. Mi recompensa son las amistades y el saludo de las personas en la calle. Lo lamentable es que se abra el pozo, sea infértil, esté seco. Hay quien me busca porque piensa que soy el mejor, pero no es así; hay otros marcadores de pozos muy buenos en Camagüey. La popularidad también depende del compromiso y la seriedad, porque quien busca abrir un pozo es porque necesita agua y esa situación tiene la cara bien fea. Todos los días las personas me ponen a prueba y hasta el momento no he defraudado a ninguna.
Pero no hay ningún secreto, la cuestión supongo esta en mi cuerpo y es cuestión de pura física. Soy sensible a la energía que genera el agua al correr. La percibo a través del alambrito «chismoso», que se dobla en forma del número ocho en el mismo lugar; cuando eso ocurre es porque hay agua.
Muchas personas hasta se persignan cuando estoy haciendo mi trabajo. Los que más saben de estos fenómenos me lo han explicado y yo trato de transmitir ese conocimiento, pero hay quien no lo entiende así y no cojo lucha con esos criterios; no me molestan. Es la gente quien crea las leyendas; prefiero ser recordado como un hombre de bien, que gusta de ayudar a los demás. Si algo me envuelve, de eso no hay quien escape.
«Son increíbles las cosas que le ocurren a uno en este oficio. Una vez en el reparto Garrido una mujer me imitó y cuando se le dobló el alambrito salió corriendo, dando sus buenos gritos. En otra ocasión, vinieron desde Najasa a ver si sabía determinar dónde había plata y oro, pero les respondí que eso era imposible».
He tenido suerte con algunos hallazgos. Hace diez años, en el poblado de Lugareño, donde marqué el agua se encontraron 140 000 monedas de antes. También en el reparto El Porvenir se halló dinero, un dedal, cinco doblones y una cadena, todos de oro. Y en el centro de Camagüey acerté con la plata.
«Eso es solo suerte; lo que busco y encuentro es agua y no fortuna. Que en el lugar donde yo marque se encuentre otra cosa mientras se abre el pozo, es pura coincidencia».
Y termina contando algo de su vida: “Desde los 14 años cortaba caña y chapeaba potreros. Fui hijo de la primera zafra de El Junquito, así que me forjé en el trabajo. Soy un padre de familia, tengo 53 años de matrimonio con una mujer maravillosa, que me acompaña de vez en cuando a marcar mis pozos; y tengo un infarto, pero que nadie se preocupe, porque me cuido como gallo fino”.
