The Cuban leader Fidel Castro kept jealously secret, until the end of his days, his personal and family privacy, an enigma that fueled its legendary image.

Much he wrote about the guerrilla, revolutionary, the declared enemy of Washington, the Communist ruler, but a few left going into his private life, for safety reasons and for its decision to not mix it with politics.

The mystery always accompanied him. Even in his last time, afflicted by intestinal crisis that led to delegate power to his brother Raul, on July 31, 2006 was almost nothing that later learned of his sudden illness.

His State of health, which initially declared “State secret”, only they were aware his wife, Dalia Soto del Valle, his brother Raul, the doctors and a small circle of officials and friends, such as Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, who died in 2013.

The Cubans almost nothing knew of the private life of the Commander in Chief, not even that had eight children – known – and hardly noticed that he began to appear near Dalia or any child in the few public activities that took after getting sick.

Married on October 12, 1948 with Mirta Diaz-Balart, philosophy student, daughter of an influential family and mother of his eldest son Fidelito, nuclear physicist, born on September 1, 1949.

Fidelito, which has a strong resemblance to his father, studied in the former Soviet Union under another name and was Executive Secretary of the Commission on Nuclear energy from 1980 to 1992.

In 1954, while he was in prison for the attempted assault on the Moncada barracks on July 26, 1953, Castro learned that Mirta was on the payroll of the Ministry of the Interior (paid salary without working), so it asked for divorce and played him custody of ‘Fidelito’.

In their years of clandestine struggle against Batista met Natalia Revuelta, ‘Naty’, beautiful blonde’s feline look, with whom he had to Alina Fernández, call “rebel daughter”, born March 3, 1956, and who in 1993 left the island with false identity toward Miami.

Antonio is a medical orthopedist and was Vice President of the International Baseball Federation, Alex is photographer, Alexis computer programmer, Alejandro also specialist in computer and mechanical Angel.

But without a doubt one of the most important women in his life was Celia Sánchez, whom he met in 1957 in the Sierra Maestra. First female guerrilla, right hand, confidant and ally, enforced his orders to the letter, was his personal Secretary until he died of cancer in January 1980.

Only few times Fidel talked about relationships, but once acknowledged that he had “a life with love”.

SECRETOS EN LA VIDA PRIVADA DE FIDEL CASTRO.

El líder cubano Fidel Castro guardó celosamente en secreto, hasta el final de sus días, su intimidad personal y familiar, un enigma que alimentó su imagen legendaria.

Mucho se escribió sobre el revolucionario, el guerrillero, el gobernante comunista, el enemigo declarado de Washington, pero a pocos dejó entrar en su vida privada, por razones de seguridad y por su decisión de no mezclarla con la política.

El misterio lo acompañó siempre. Incluso en su último tiempo, aquejado por la crisis intestinal que el 31 de julio de 2006 lo llevó a delegar el poder en su hermano Raúl, fue casi nada lo que se supo de su repentina enfermedad.

De su estado de salud, que en un inicio declaró “secreto de Estado”, sólo estuvieron al tanto su mujer, Dalia Soto del Valle, su hermano Raúl, los médicos y un pequeño círculo de funcionarios y amigos, como el presidente venezolano Hugo Chávez, que falleció en 2013.

Los cubanos casi nada supieron de la vida privada del Comandante en Jefe, ni siquiera que tuvo ocho hijos -conocidos-, y apenas se percataron de que empezó a aparecer cerca de Dalia o algún hijo, en las pocas actividades públicas que tuvo tras enfermarse.

El barbudo guerrillero que en 1959 puso fin a la dictadura de Fulgencio Batista, trató de evitar a toda costa que Fidel, el hombre, fuera blanco de entretenimiento o de ataque de sus opositores.

“Es tal el pudor con que protege su intimidad que su vida privada ha terminado por ser el enigma más hermético de su leyenda”, dijo en una ocasión su amigo, el escritor colombiano y Premio Nobel, Gabriel García Márquez, fallecido en 2014.

Se casó el 12 de octubre de 1948 con Mirta Díaz-Balart, estudiante de filosofía, hija de una familia influyente y madre de su primogénito Fidelito, físico nuclear, nacido el 1 de septiembre de 1949.

Fidelito, que tiene un gran parecido a su padre, estudió en la antigua Unión Soviética bajo otro nombre y fue secretario ejecutivo de la Comisión de Energía Nuclear de 1980 a 1992.

En 1954, mientras estaba preso por el frustrado asalto al cuartel Moncada del 26 de julio de 1953, Castro se enteró de que Mirta figuraba en la nómina del Ministerio del Interior (cobraba salario sin trabajar), por lo que le pidió el divorcio y le disputó la patria potestad de ‘Fidelito’.

Naty Revuelta, que siempre se dijo fue el gran amor de Fidel Castro.

En sus años de lucha clandestina contra Batista conoció a Natalia Revuelta, ‘Naty’, hermosa rubia de mirada felina, con quien tuvo a Alina Fernández, la llamada “hija rebelde”, nacida el 3 de marzo de 1956, y quien en 1993 salió de la isla con falsa identidad hacia a Miami.

Alina, quien adoptó el apellido Fernández de su padrastro y huyó de Cuba.

Según la escritora brasileña Claudia Furiati, autora de una biografía consentida del líder cubano, a mediados de 1955 Castro se relacionó con María Laborde -ahora fallecida-, activista de su movimiento revolucionario y madre de su hijo Jorge Ángel, químico de profesión.

En 1961 conoció a Dalia Soto del Valle, una rubia de ojos verdes, unos 15 años menor que él, que era maestra en la campaña de alfabetización. Ella es la madre de cinco de sus nueve hijos conocidos: Alejandro, Alex, Antonio, Alexis y Ángel.

Antonio es médico ortopedista y fue vicepresidente de la Federación Internacional de Béisbol, Alex es fotógrafo, Alexis programador informático, Alejandro también especialista en computación y Ángel mecánico.

Como anécdota, cuentan sus biógrafos, la fijación por los nombres con “A” le venía a Fidel de su segundo nombre, Alejandro, con el que se identificó en su época de rebelde en la Sierra Maestra; de “Ángel”, su padre; o de su admiración por Alejandro Magno.

Entregada su vida por completo a la causa de la revolución, el tiempo para sus hijos y nietos no fue mucho, aunque, según dijo al cineasta estadounidense Oliver Stone en una entrevista en 2003, trató de aprovecharlo al máximo.

Además, tuvo otros dos hijos: Jorge Ángel y Fancisca Pupo.

Aunque era un hombre solitario, muchos amores marcaron la vida del comandante, según Furiati. Amigos y enemigos le reconocieron ser un caballero con las damas y varias extranjeras escribieron recuerdos elogiosos sobre encuentros con él.

Pero sin duda una de las mujeres más importantes de su vida fue Celia Sánchez, a quien conoció en 1957 en la Sierra Maestra. Primera mujer guerrillera, mano derecha, confidente y aliada, hizo cumplir sus órdenes al pie de la letra, fue su secretaria personal hasta que murió de cáncer en enero de 1980.

Solo contadas veces Fidel habló de sus relaciones, pero reconoció en una ocasión que tuvo “una vida con amor”.
