Travel in Cuba could become the minimum in an exercise of absurd surrealism. The mix of Caribbean, socialism and witchcraft produces exaggerated results, that is known, but reality sometimes leaves one dumbfounded.

Viajar por Cuba puede convertirse mínimamente en un ejercicio de surrealismo disparatado. La mezcla de Caribe, socialismo y brujería produce resultados exagerados, eso se sabe, pero en ocasiones la realidad lo deja a uno pasmado.
Pero eso no es nada si se compara con lo visto en Cabañas, una pequeña localidad de 7.000 habitantes situada a 70 kilómetros al oeste de La Habana, donde existe un oasis, y no precisamente político, sino con palmeras y auténticos dromedarios. Fue en ese pequeño pueblecito de la Habana, en el pueblo de Cabañas, cuando por primera vez un lugareño, devoto de la regla de Palo Monte, religión afrocubana famosa por la efectividad de su brujería, nos habló de “los camellos de Fidel”.
Cuál no sería la sorpresa cuando en un potrero cercado aparecieron medio centenar de animales acostados. Ya en confianza, el custodio aclaró: “Camellos no, son dromedarios. Éstos tienen una sola lomita”.
El vigilante contó que en 1992, cuando los rigores del periodo especial eran más bravos, un día unos hombres trajeron a La Herradura una cuerda de 38 camellos y poco después apareció Fidel Castro. Uno de los campesinos-custodios, que no permite hacer fotografías opina igual que parte del poblado que quizá fuesen sólo un regalo al presidente cubano de algún mandatario árabe.
Pero la realidad es que a miles de kilómetros de su entorno natural, más de 70 dromedarios crecen en Cuba sin dificultades.
Tienen favorables índices reproductivos y se alimentan de marabú y forrajes, que incluyen algún concentrado proteínico de maíz, soya u otras plantas. Se nutren de similares pastizales que el ganado vacuno, no hay que importarles nutrientes pues comen todo tipo de leguminosas.
Estos animales caminan todo el territorio de la finca a lo largo de la costa, y cuando caen en celo, no creen en cercas, los machos las destrozan para alcanzar su objetivo reproductor, actitud que les dura aproximadamente de mayo a noviembre. Son muy impulsivos en esa época y no es fácil detenerlos cuando huelen o divisan la hembra: es un llamado tan fuerte que no pueden evitarlo, aunque para ello tengan que atravesar toda la granja.
Cuando los he visto en alguna exhibition en el cine he tenido la impresión de que no soportaría el paso como cansino y bamboleante de los dromedarios; pero los beduinos se acostumbraron a ellos y aprendieron a emplearlos por su fuerza, su capacidad de carga y la facilidad con que soportan la falta de comida y de líquido. Un ejemplar de los mayores puede beber decenas de litros de agua en unos minutos y pasar hasta una semana sin ella y sin comida. Suelen alcanzar un peso de hasta 700 kilogramos y cargar unos 450, más de la mitad de su propio peso. En cambio, no son muy rápidos, pues su velocidad es de unos cinco kilómetros por hora, que se pueden convertir en 20 para los animales de carrera.
Los dromedarios de La Herradura en Cuba no están destinados a los zoológicos cubanos. Su función futura, cuando estén preparados, será dedicarlos al turismo como una oferta exótica.
Entonces, podrán andar sobre la arena, como taxis que podrían cubrir las largas distancias de playas como Varadero, Cayo Largo o Cayo Coco. Claro, serán taxis algo lentos, en los cuales el pasajero no podrá llevar prisa, sino aprovechar el viaje para gozar del entorno y, quizás, imaginar que avanza hacia algún oasis lejano.
Quiero repetir antes de terminar una frase que oi decir en algún lugar que no llego a recordar.. ‘la mezcla de Caribe, socialismo y brujería producen resultados exagerados’ y en la Cuba de hoy no es de extrañarse nada.
