Cuba and the United States signed the first direct roaming agreement between the two countries. Representing the island, they signed the pact the ETECSA, the Cuban state monopoly, and the United States signed the business operators Sprint.
Thus, the 60 million Sprint customers can “make and receive calls, send and receive text messages and transmit data on the network Etecsa with their own mobile phones,” the joint statement, which until now was not possible in Cuba to American lines.
Etecsa and Sprint signed last September 22, 2015 an agreement for direct interconnection through the ALBA-1 submarine cable which connects fiber optic Cuba and Venezuela for direct calls between Cuba and the US.
The roaming service still does not work because, due to the embargo on Cuba, “is not allowed to perform transactions with US banks and banks of other countries fear sanctions,” said ETECSA in a statement.
Roaming is part of the growth strategy and is something that Sprint has already driven in Canada, Mexico and other Latin American countries.

Cuba y Estados Unidos firmaron el primer acuerdo de roaming directo entre ambos países. En representación de la isla, suscribieron el pacto los operadores Etecsa, el monopolio estatal cubano, y por los Estados Unidos firmó la empresa Sprint.
De este modo, los 60 millones de clientes de Sprint podrán “realizar y recibir llamadas, enviar y recibir mensajes de texto y transmitir datos en la red de Etecsa con sus propios teléfonos móviles”, según el comunicado conjunto, algo que hasta ahora no era posible en Cuba para líneas estadounidenses.
Etecsa y Sprint suscribieron el pasado 22 de septiembre de 2015 un acuerdo para la interconexión directa, a través del cable submarino ALBA-1 -que une por fibra óptica a Cuba y Venezuela- para llamadas directas entre Cuba y EE.UU.
El servicio de roaming todavía no funciona ya que, debido al embargo sobre Cuba, “no se permite realizar transacciones con bancos norteamericanos y los bancos de otros países temen sanciones”, aclaró Etecsa en un comunicado.
El roaming es parte de la estrategia de crecimiento de Sprint y es algo que ha impulsado ya en Canadá, México y otros países de Latinoamérica.
