Pope Francis to visit Cuba between 19 and 22 September, in a tour that will also take him to the United States, said Monday the US Conference of Catholic Bishops of Cuba (COCC).
The Pope will visit the cities of Havana, Holguin and Santiago de Cuba, in the west of the country, a trip considered historical, as the pope acted as mediator in the process of melting Havana and Washington.
“The Conference of Catholic Bishops of Cuba is pleased to announce that the Pope will be in Cuba from Saturday 19 to Tuesday 22 September this year,” said the COCC in a statement posted on its website.
The dates of the visit were released a day after Cuban President Raul Castro, met at the Vatican with the Pope, to prepare your trip and personally thank you for your involvement in the process of restoration of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States, announced on December 17.
The Pope will begin his visit in Havana and then go to “the city of Holguin, the Santuario del Cobre and the city of Santiago de Cuba”, from where he will travel to the United States.
In the Sanctuary of Cobre, about 20 kilometers west of Santiago de Cuba, the Virgin of Charity of Cobre, patroness of Cuba was venerated.
The Vatican confirmed the April 17 visit of Francis to the island in September, before the trip that was scheduled for the United States, although the exact dates were not known.
This is the third papal visit to Cuba in 17 years received since John Paul II traveled to the island in January 1998 and Benedict XVI in March 2012.

EL PAPA FRANCISCO EN CUBA: desde el 19 al 22 de Septiembre.
El Papa Francisco visitará Cuba entre el 19 y el 22 de septiembre, dentro de una gira que le llevará después a Estados Unidos, anunció este lunes la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Cuba (COCC).
El Pontífice visitará las ciudades de La Habana, Holguín y Santiago de Cuba, en el oeste del país, un viaje considerado histórico, ya que el Papa actuó de mediador en el proceso de deshielo de La Habana y Washington.
«La Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Cuba se complace en comunicar que el Santo Padre estará en Cuba desde el sábado 19 al martes 22 de septiembre del presente año», indicó la COCC en un comunicado publicado en su página web.
Las fechas de la visita se han dado a conocer un día después de que el presidente cubano, Raúl Castro, se reuniera en el Vaticano con el Papa, para preparar su viaje y agradecerle personalmente su implicación en el proceso de restauración de las relaciones diplomáticas entre Cuba y Estados Unidos, que se anunció el 17 de diciembre.
La pontífice iniciará su visita en La Habana e irá luego a «la ciudad de Holguín, el Santuario del Cobre y la ciudad de Santiago de Cuba», desde donde viajará a Estados Unidos.
En el Santuario del Cobre, a unos 20 kilómetros al oeste de Santiago de Cuba, se venera la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, patrona de Cuba.
El Vaticano confirmó el 17 de abril la visita de Francisco a la isla en septiembre, antes del viaje que ya tenía programado a Estados Unidos, aunque no se conocían las fechas exactas.
Se trata de la tercera visita papal que recibe Cuba en 17 años, ya que Juan Pablo II viajó a la isla en enero 1998 y Benedicto XVI en marzo de 2012.
