HISTORIA DE LA REPUBLICA DE CUBA: DOS MUJERES LEGISLADORAS.
Comencemos con extractos de las interesantes historias de dos legisladoras elegidas en la antigua República Cubana. Son los casos de la pintora Loló Soldevilla y la de María Teresa Zayas.
A esa última, hija del ex presidente Alfredo Zayas, la eligieron al Senado en dos ocasiones. La segunda vez desempeñó su mandato de principio a fin entre 1944 y 1948, pero la primera lo renunció, en 1942, cuando llevaba dos años en el cargo. Lo ocupó entonces Eugenio Rodríguez Cartas, su suplente, y todo quedó en familia porque era además su esposo.
Ella conoció al que sería su marido en una visita al Castillo del Príncipe, donde Rodríguez Cartas cumplía sanción por el asesinato, en 1917, de Florencio Guerra, alcalde provisional de Cienfuegos. No era ese ciertamente su primer crimen, pues en 1911 y también por asesinato, lo condenó la Audiencia de Santa Clara. Tampoco sería el último: en 1950 cosería literalmente a balazos, en el edificio América, de la calle Galiano, al representante a la Cámara Rafael Frayle Goldarás, hecho que quedó impune, y apenas un año después fue parte principal en el secuestro en La Habana del líder obrero dominicano Mauricio Báez, sacado de Cuba en secreto y servido en bandeja de plata al sátrapa Rafael Leónidas Trujillo sin que nunca se precisara su destino, que es de suponer. Pero esa es otra historia.
El caso es que en aquella visita al Castillo del Príncipe, María Teresa Zayas se enamoró de Rodríguez Cartas y consiguió que su padre, a la sazón en la Presidencia de la República, lo amnistiara. Alguien podría preguntarse cómo un asesino convicto y confeso se las arreglaba para llegar al Congreso de la nación. Así eran las cosas. Las amnistías limpiaban los antecedentes penales y lo demás era cuestión de mover influencias y dinero suficientes. Un acta de representante a la Cámara por el Partido Auténtico en 1950 costaba no menos de 100 000 pesos, cifra nada difícil de recuperar si se salía electo.
Loló Soldevilla fue, parece, una legisladora fecunda, pero se cansó pronto de su labor en el Congreso y renunció a su escaño, que conquistó por La Habana aunque era pinareña de nacimiento.
Se alejó así de la política activa para dedicarse por entero a las que eran sus dos vocaciones: la pintura y el cultivo de las letras. Estaba casada con Eusebio Mujal, el auténtico y luego batistiano líder de la CTC. En tiempos de Batista, y separada ya de su esposo, se desempeñó como agregada cultural en la embajada de Cuba en París. Más tarde —31 de octubre de 1957— ya con otros amores, abrió en 5ta. avenida esquina a 84, en Miramar, la galería Color-Luz. Después del triunfo de la Revolución se quedó en Cuba y publicó un par de libros. Quien esto escribe recuerda, de mediados de los años 60, los paseos de Loló Soldevilla por la calle Obispo, con una vestimenta un tanto estrafalaria y rodeada siempre de un séquito de muchachos de ambos sexos que la trataban casi como a una diosa.

También se quedó en Cuba Alicia Hernández de la Barca y desplegó una valiosa tarea en el sector de la educación, en particular en la Dirección Nacional de los Círculos Infantiles. Siendo estudiante universitaria conoció a muchos de los que después serían figuras significativas en el Partido Auténtico, en el que también militó ella. Fue amiga de Ramón Grau San Martín que, a su llegada al poder, en 1944, la nombró subsecretaria (viceministra) de Educación, y desde ese departamento, donde permaneció hasta 1946, fue la colaboradora más eficaz del ministro Luis Pérez Espinós en su campaña de Todo por el Niño. En 1950 Alicia fue una de las gestoras de la ley por la equiparación de la mujer y del matrimonio. Murió en La Habana, con más de 90 años de edad.
En un momento la llamaron La Novia del Autenticismo. Por esa organización política llegó a la Cámara en 1946 y volvió en 1950, mandato este que no pudo concluir porque el golpe de Estado del 10 de marzo de 1952 interrumpió el ritmo institucional de la nación.
Muy joven accedió, como profesora de Matemáticas, al claustro de la Escuela Normal para Maestros de La Habana.
La había designado su padrino, el general José Braulio Alemán, secretario (ministro) de Educación del presidente Machado. A la Doctora Carolina Poncet, toda una institución en la Normal, le molestó la juventud de la nueva colega. Comentó entonces la estudiosa del romancero cubano y de la obra de José Jacinto Milanés y Joaquín Lorenzo Luaces, que Cuba era un país de sorpresas y añadió enseguida que no entendía cómo una muchachita tan joven fuera ya catedrática de una escuela como aquella. Alicia respondió que no la nombraron por su edad, sino por sus títulos.
—¿Cuántos títulos universitarios tiene usted?, preguntó Alicia a la Poncet.
—Dos, respondió la aludida.
—Pues yo tengo cuatro.
Era, en efecto, Doctora en Farmacia, en Pedagogía, en Ciencias Físico-Matemáticas y en Ciencias Naturales.
Pese a sus discrepancias con el presidente Carlos Prío, Alicia Hernández de la Barca fue la única mujer que en las horas que siguieron al golpe de Estado batistiano se hizo presente en Palacio para manifestar su apoyo y colaboración al mandatario depuesto. Lo instó a resistir y cuando se convenció de que no lo haría, sugirió, sin éxito, que los parlamentarios se hicieran fuertes en el Capitolio. Al despedirse de Prío y virarle la espalda para siempre, le echó en cara su falta de arrojo con una frase lapidaria.
Le dijo:
—Recuerda que tu madre fue mambisa.

HISTORY OF THE CUBAN REPUBLIC: TWO WOMEN LEGISLATORS.
Let’s start with extracts of the interesting stories of two women legislators, chosen in the former Cuban Republic. Are the cases of the artist Lolo Soldevilla and Maria Teresa Zayas.
In the latter, daughter of former President Alfredo Zayas, she was elected to the Senate twice. The second time served his term from start to finish between 1944 and 1948, but first it resigned in 1942, when he had two years in office. He was then held Eugenio Rodríguez Letters, his deputy, and all was family because it was also her husband.
She met her future husband on a visit to the Castillo del Principe, where Rodriguez Card was serving a sentence for the murder in 1917 of Florencio War, interim mayor of Cienfuegos. That certainly was not his first crime, and then in 1911 for murder, sentenced the Audiencia of Santa Clara. Nor would it be the last: in 1950 literally sew with bullets, in the America building, street Galiano, the Chamber representative Rafael Frayle Goldarás, a fact that went unpunished, and barely a year later was principal part in the kidnapping in Havana Dominican labor leader Mauricio Baez, I secretly out of Cuba and served on a silver platter the satrap Rafael Leonidas Trujillo without their destination, which presumably was never specified. But that is another story.
The fact is that in this visit to the Castillo del Principe, Maria Teresa Rodriguez Zayas fell in love letters and got his father, then in the Office of the President, pardon him. Someone might wonder how a convicted and confessed murderer managed to reach the US Congress. So things were. Amnesties cleaned criminal records and the other was a matter of moving influences and enough money. An act of House Representative for the Authentic Party in 1950 cost no less than 100 000 pesos, all difficult to recover figure out if elected.
Lolo Soldevilla was, it seems, a prolific legislator, but soon tired of his work in Congress and resigned his seat, who won by Havana Pinar though he was born.
It is well away from active politics to devote himself entirely to that were his two vocations: painting and the cultivation of letters. She was married to Eusebio Mujal, then Batista authentic leader of the CTC. In times of Batista, and separated and her husband served as cultural attaché at the Embassy of Cuba in Paris. Later -31 October 1957 and with other loves, opened in 5ta. 84 Avenue corner in Miramar, Color-Light Gallery. After the triumph of the Revolution in Cuba and was published a couple of books. This writer recalls the mid-60s, Lolo Soldevilla walks down the street Obispo, with a somewhat quirky and always surrounded by an entourage of young men and women who treated almost as a goddess dress.

He also stayed in Cuba Alicia Hernández de la Barca and deployed a valuable task in the education sector, particularly in the National care centers. Being a college student met many who later would be significant figures in the Authentic Party, in which she also played for. She was a friend of Ramon Grau San Martin, who, upon his arrival to power in 1944, the appointed secretary (deputy minister) of Education, and from that department, where he remained until 1946, was the most effective contributor to the minister Luis Perez Espinós in his campaign of everything for the child. Alicia in 1950 was one of the promoters of the law by the equality of women and marriage. He died in Havana, with over 90 years of age.

It was, indeed, Doctor of Pharmacy, Pedagogy in Physics and Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
Despite his differences with President Carlos Prio, Alicia Hernández de la Barca was the only woman in the hours following the coup by Batista was present at Palace to show their support and collaboration of the deposed president. He urged him to resist and when he was convinced he would not, he suggested, without success, that parliamentarians were made strong on Capitol Hill.
