Raúl Castro elogió este domingo al papa Francisco por “su sabiduría y su modestia”, aseguró que lee “todos sus discursos” y dijo que si el Pontífice “sigue así”, él mismo regresará a la Iglesia Católica, reporta EFE.
“Yo volveré a rezar y regreso a la Iglesia, y no lo digo en broma”, comentó el general en una comparecencia ante la prensa junto al primer ministro italiano, Matteo Renzi, con quien se entrevistó después de mantener una audiencia privada con el Papa.
Raúl Castro viajó a Roma desde Moscú. Su reunión con el Pontífice fue descrita como “estrictamente privada”. El dictador aseguró asimismo que asistirá “a todas las misas” que Bergoglio oficie durante su viaje a Cuba, previsto para septiembre. Recordó que él estudió en instituciones religiosas de jesuitas, la misma orden del papa Francisco.
No obstante, recordó: “Soy comunista, del Partido Comunista Cubano”.
Francisco y Raúl Castro aparecieron juntos durante unos minutos ante la prensa tras el encuentro. El portavoz del Vaticano, Federico Lombardi, dijo que la entrevista, de 55 minutos, fue “cordial” y sirvió para que Castro “agradeciera la mediación” del Pontífice en el acercamiento histórico entre los gobiernos Cuba y Estados Unidos, reportó la AFP.

En su comparecencia junto al primer ministro italiano ante los medios de comunicación, Castro aludió la decisión del presidente estadounidense, Barack Obama, de sacar a La Habana de la lista de patrocinadores del terrorismo.
“Nunca tendríamos que haber sido incluidos en esa lista de países terroristas. Quizás el próximo 28 de mayo el Senado de los Estados Unidos nos sacará de esa famosa lista”, comentó.
Se refirió además a las relaciones entre la Unión Europea y La Habana, y a la Posición Común de los Veintiocho, vigente desde 2003. “Debemos aprender a vivir con nuestras diferencias”, afirmó el dictador.
Por último, dijo que su régimen está “intentando llevar adelante la mejora” de su “sistema político, social y cultural, pero es muy difícil hacerlo sin shock, sin dejar a nadie en el camino”, dijo.
El general no respondió a preguntas de la prensa. Se justificó diciendo que su agenda no lo permitía ya que debe que regresar a la Isla para recibir al presidente francés, François Hollande.
