The film tells the story of fifties friends, Aldo, Eddy, Tania and Rafa, who meet on a roof at the Malecon in Havana to celebrate the turn of the fifth member of the group, Amadeo, after his exile in Madrid for sixteen years . The night passes between laughter and joy at the reunion, wistfully remembering the past and youthful dreams truncated by the Revolution.

The film is directed by Frenchman Laurent Cantet, third time choose Cuba as stage after 7 Days in Havana and Foxfire, and starring Jorge Perugorria, who also participated in the belt 7 Days in Havana and also know as their roles in Che: The Argentine, Che: Guerrilla and Fresa y chocolate. Isabel Santos, Néstor Jiménez, Fernando Hechevarría and Pedro Julio Diaz Ferran complete the cast.
With Return to Ithaca, Cantet again demonstrates his ability to compose dramatically intense frames starting from everyday life, in this case the lives of five friends. The film addresses issues such as exile, political disappointment and hardship of an entire generation in the political and social context that followed the Cuban Revolution and later during the economic crisis in which the island was plunged after the fall of the block Soviet, which, among other things, prevented the personal and collective achievement of Cuban society.

It was presented at the 62nd International Film Festival in San Sebasián Pearls Section, won the Prize of the 23rd Hug Biarritz Festival and Venice Days Award 71st Venice Film Festival. In Cuba, the film has been controversial. The Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry excluded her from the 36th Film Festival of Havana program, once approved its projection by the direction of the festival, claiming that the film does not fit into any of the categories of programming. LA película cuenta la historia de unos amigos cincuentones, Aldo, Eddy, Tania y Rafa, que se reúnen en una azotea en el malecón de La Habana para festejar la vuelta del quinto integrante del grupo, Amadeo, tras su exilio en Madrid durante dieciséis años. La noche transcurre entre risas y alegría por el reencuentro, recordando con nostalgia los tiempos pasados y sus sueños de juventud truncados por la Revolución.

La cinta está dirigida por el francés Laurent Cantet, que por tercera vez elige Cuba como escenario tras 7 días en La Habana y Foxfire, y protagonizada por Jorge Perugorria, que también participó en la cinta 7 días en la Habana y al que también conocemos por sus papeles en Che: El Argentino, Che: Guerrilla y Fresa y chocolate. Con Regreso a Ítaca, Cantet demuestra una vez más su habilidad para componer tramas dramáticamente intensas partiendo de la cotidianidad, en este caso de la vida de los cinco amigos. La cinta aborda temas como el exilio, la desilusión política y las penurias de toda una generación en el contexto político y social que siguió a la Revolución cubana y más tarde durante la crisis económica en la que se vio inmersa la isla tras la caída del bloque soviético, que, entre otras cosas, impidió la realización personal y colectiva de la sociedad cubana.
Los protagonistas de la película, que vivieron con sacrificio e ilusión la revolución cubana, tuvieron que enfrentarse después a la pelea diaria por la supervivencia en un país sumido en la crisis
Los ideales que les empujaron a sublevarse ante una situación injusta dieron paso a otra pelea, la del día a día por la supervivencia.
CUESTIONADA EN CUBA La película ha sido reconocida internacionalmente. Fue presentada en el 62º Festival de Cine de San Sebasián en la Sección Perlas, ganó el Premio Abrazo del 23º Festival de Biarritz y el Premio Venice Days del 71º Festival de Venecia. En Cuba, el filme ha sido motivo de polémica. El Instituto Cubano de Arte e Industria Cinematográfica la excluyó del programa del 36º Festival de Cine de La Habana, una vez aprobada su proyección por parte de la dirección del festival, alegando que la película no encajaba en ninguna de las categorías de la programación. Tras la polémica creada, fue proyectada en mayo de 2014 en la Semana del Cine Francés de la isla.
ADAPTACIÓN LITERARIA El largometraje es una adaptación para la gran pantalla de uno de los pasajes de la obra cubana La novela de mi vida, de Leonardo Padura, que ha colaborado estrechamente con el director en el guion. El escritor vio en este trabajo una oportunidad para transmitir y expresar a través del cine una de las principales preocupaciones que recorre toda su literatura: el lugar que la generación de la que él forma parte ocupa en la historia cubana más reciente. Sus obras retratan a hombres y mujeres que en su juventud participaron activamente en los acontecimientos que cambiaron su país soñando con recoger en el futuro los frutos del sacrificio realizado. En las historias de los personajes de la película están reflejadas las posturas diversas que hoy conviven en Cuba: personas que optaron por el exilio y regresaron, jóvenes que quieren irse del país, revolucionarios desengañados pero fieles a los viejos ideales…
Y como fondo, los desmanes del sistema, que provoca el rechazo y la ira de los protagonistas. Todos comparten la impresión de que les han robado la vida con la que soñaban de jóvenes. Pero van más allá, sienten rabia y culpa por haber permitido que sucediera.
