The White Sox team will play the upcoming MLB season number 9 on an added sticker to their uniforms, a posthumous tribute to the legendary Orestes “Minnie” Minoso, whose funeral will be held this Saturday in Chicago.
The announcement was made by Brooks Boyer, vice president of sales and marketing of the franchise during the funeral of Miñoso that from noon on Friday rallied a crowd of family, friends and supporters of the White Sox in the Church of the Holy Family Windy City.
Near the coffin was hung a uniform with the legendary 9 Miñoso use in his 12-year career with the White Sox. The franchise retired the number in 1983.
Miñoso corpse was displayed in an open casket. Fans attended with shirts, jackets, hats, balls and alluding to the organization for which Hugo and worked until his last days Miñoso photographs.
“When you look at what he did on the field, no doubt he is a player of Hall of Fame. But for us, he belongs in the Hall of Fame as a person,” Boxer said in remarks to the Chicago Tribune.
Miñoso was not selected for the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown though his stats by 17 major league seasons are considered to merit the distinction. The last vote of the Veterans Committee last December, dismissed his candidacy with two other Cuban outfielder Tony Oliva and pitcher Luis Tiant.

El equipo de los Medias Blancas jugará la venidera temporada de Grandes Ligas con el número 9 en una pegatina añadida a sus uniformes, en tributo póstumo al legendario Orestes “Minnie” Miñoso, cuyo sepelio se realizará este sábado en Chicago.
El anuncio fue hecho por Brooks Boyer, vicepresidente de ventas y mercadeo de la franquicia durante los funerales de Miñoso, que desde el mediodía del viernes congregaron una multitud de familiares, amigos y seguidores de los Medias Blancas en la Iglesia de la Sagrada Familia de la Ciudad de los Vientos.
Junto al féretro fue colgado un uniforme con el mítico 9 que Miñoso uso en su carrera de 12 años con los Medias Blancas. La franquicia retiró el número en 1983.
El cadáver de Miñoso fue exhibido en un ataúd abierto. Los aficionados concurrieron con camisetas, chaquetas, gorras, pelotas y fotografías alusivas a la organización para la que hugó y trabajó Miñoso hasta sus últimos días.
“Cuando nos fijamos en lo que hizo en el terreno, sin dudas que es un jugador del Salón de la Fama. Pero para nosotros, él pertenece al Salón de la Fama como persona”, dijo Boxer en declaraciones al diario Chicago Tribune.
Miñoso no fue seleccionado para el Salón de la Fama de Cooperstown a pesar de que sus estadísticas por 17 temporadas en Grandes Ligas son consideradas con mérito para la distinción. La última votación del Comité de Veteranos, el pasado diciembre, descartó su candidatura junto a otros dos cubanos, el jardinero Tony Oliva y el lanzador Luis Tiant.
