Cuando las zafras azucareras repiten cada año su fracaso, y los esfuerzos por descubrir petróleo en el fondo marino se van inexorablemente a pique, el gobierno de Cuba parece haber hallado en las Grandes Ligas del béisbol de Estados Unidos una fuente indirecta de recaudación de divisas.
Aroldis Chapman, Yoenis Céspedes, Yasiel Puig, José Abreu y –hace unos pocos días– Rusney Castillo, un jugador de Ciego de Ávila, negociaron contratos multimillonarios que repercuten en el bienestar de sus familiares en la Isla y al propio tiempo dejan una huella en las depauperadas arcas de la economía oficial.

Castillo, outfielder y jugador de cuadro de 27 años de edad, mejoró, con su contrato de 72,5 millones y siete temporadas, a las órdenes del Boston Red Sox, el récord que detentaba este propio año el cienfueguero “Pito” Abreu, de 68 millones y seis campañas con Chicago White Sox, la primera de las cuales desarrolla con notas sobresalientes.

En 2014 el lance fue más largo y ambicioso, con el desembarco de Frederich Cepeda, Yulieski Gourriel y el propio Despaigne en la liga japonesa, verdadera realización de un sueño amasado por los propietarios asiáticos desde los años 90 del pasado siglo, cuando suspiraban por contratar a Germán Mesa o Jorge Luis Valdés.
“Con la paga de uno de esos peloteros ustedes costearían íntegramente los gastos de la delegación de Cuba en la Olimpiada de Barcelona”, fue el anzuelo lanzado aquella vez desde la gerencia del Yomiuri. Eran los tiempos en que la crisis económica de la isla socialista, arropada con el manto piadoso de “período especial”, comenzaba a asfixiar a un pueblo entero.
Con la Serie del Caribe 2015 en el horizonte y Puerto Rico como sede, no sé qué harán los burócratas cubanos para que ningún pelotero escape hacia el profesionalismo, ahora que el éxito de sus compatriotas les permite perder el miedo, como a estas alturas tampoco sé si lo que desean es que todos esos muchachos se vayan en busca del billete verde.
