COMIENZA LA OLIMPIADA MUNDIAL DE AJEDREZ.

Leinier Dominguez y su homóloga Lisandra Ordaz lideran a los equipos cubanos de ajedrez que enfrentan a Puerto Rico y Costa Rica, respectivamente, en la primera ronda de la Olimpiada Mundial, que se disputa en la ciudad noruega de Troms.

Dominguez, lugar 11 del ranking mundial, enfrenta al MF Mark Machin, en tanto Lisandra, primera en el ranking nacional, se mide a la MF Olga Leticia Gamboa, en ambos casos conducen las piezas negras.

En el seleccionado masculino tambien juegan este sabado los GM Lázaro Bruzón, Yunieski Quesada y el debutante Yuri Gonzáles.

Por su parte, en el femenino, además de Ordaz , Cuba esta alineando a Yaniet Marrero, Sulennis Piña y la novata Yanira Vigoa.

Cuba ha participado en 27 Olimpiadas en la clasificación masculina y 14 en la rama femenina. En la última cita, celebrada en 2012, los varones terminaron en el undécimo lugar, en tanto las féminas concluyeron en el puesto 19.

Las mejores actuaciones históricas de los equipos cubanos se alcanzaron, en la rama masculina , en los años 1990 y 2004, con un séptimo lugar, mientras, que las mujeres lograron su mejor labor en 2010 con un cuarto lugar.

STARTS THE CHESS WORLD OLYMPIAD.

Leinier Dominguez and Lisandra Ordaz form the leading Cuban chess teams to face Puerto Rico and Costa Rica, respectively, in the first round of the World Championships, which takes place in the Norwegian city of Troms.

Dominguez, 11th place world ranking, faces the MF Mark Machin, while Lisandra, first in the national ranking, the MF Olga Leticia Gamboa is measured in both cases lead the black pieces.

In the men selected also play this Saturday GM Lázaro Bruzón, Yunieski Quesada and debutant Yuri Gonzales.

Meanwhile, in the women’s plus Ordaz, aligning Cuba this Yaniet Marrero, Pineapple and rookie Sulennis Yanira Vigoa.

TRIBUTO MUSICAL A ALVAREZ GUEDES: A FAREWELL MAMBO FOR WILLY.

Con Guillermo Alvarez Guedes llegué a tener una linda amistad. Nos comunicábamos con frecuencia y él me llamaba siempre que se enteraba que yo recibía un premio. Este año llamó en su lugar Elsita, la esposa, cuando Song for Maura recibió el Grammy al Mejor Album de Jazz Latino, y fue algo que me emocionó mucho. Cachao era otro que siempre llamaba en ocasiones similares.

A Guillermo le gustaba mucho Wagner, y la música y los personajes de la música fueron temas que contribuyeron a estrechar nuestra fecunda familiaridad en estos años.

La muerte de nuestro querido amigo -ocurrida el 30 de julio del 2013- me sorprendió componiendo una pieza para cuarteto de clarinetes que no vacilé en titular A Farewell Mambo for Willy en tributo a su memoria.

La compañia francesa Vandoren fabrica cañas (paletas, reeds en inglés) para instrumentos de viento-madera, lo cual resulta como el equivalente de los bates Slugger en Lousville, Kentucky, la Stetson para los sombreros o la Heinz con el Ketchup. Yo anuncio sus productos y un par de veces me han comisionado a escribir piezas para instrumentos de caña. Una vez fue mi Cape Cod Concerto, para clarinete y orquesta, otra fue The Elephant and The Clown, para ocho clarinetes (doble cuarteto), que se estrenó en la convención de clarinetes de París, y ahora esta obra, que se estrenó finalmente en la Universidad de Illinois.

La pieza está basada en los tres primeros compases del tema musical que usaba Guillermo para presentarse, una especie de vamp, un mambito que se repetía y repetía mientras él entraba a escena. A Farewell Mambo for Willy abre de forma muy dramática y va desarrollando el mismo tema que se convierte en un mambo de despedida al genial comediante.

Después escribí una versión para cuarteto de saxofones, que estrenó el Latin Sax Quartet en la Navidad del pasado año.

Así es como quiero recordar a mi amigo Guillermo, un cubano indispensable, quien junto a Leopoldo Fernández, Trespatines, cada uno en sus estilos tan diferentes, trajeron tanta alegría a sus compatriotas y a muchísima gente en este mundo.

A MUSICAL TRIBUTE GUEDES ALVAREZ: A FAREWELL FOR MAMBO WILLY. <

With Guillermo Alvarez Guedes got to have a nice friendship. We communicated frequently and he always called me that he found out that I received an award. INVITARAN FORMALMENTE A CUBA A VII REUNION DE LA OEA.

La próxima Cumbre de las Américas se celebrará entre la primera y segunda semana de mayo próximo en Panamá y Cuba será invitada a participar formalmente, informó hoy la vicepresidenta y canciller panameña, Isabel De Saint Malo de Alvarado.

En un encuentro con miembros de la Asociación de Corresponsales de Prensa Extranjera en Panamá (ACOPEP), la vicepresidenta panameña explicó que actualmente se están haciendo las visitas y gestiones preparatorias para el séptimo encuentro continental, pero que la invitación a Cuba “es una decisión”.

“En la última asamblea general de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA) en Paraguay, era evidente el deseo de la región de que Cuba esté presente”, acotó.

El trigésimo quinto Estado miembro de la OEA, Cuba, se encuentra suspendido desde 1962 de la organización panamericana.

De Saint Malo añadió que “estamos trabajando para que la cumbre sea un éxito y con una participación al más alto nivel de todos los países”.

Por su parte, el vicecanciller panameño, Luis Miguel Hincapié, dijo en el mismo encuentro que durante la toma de posesión del presidente Juan Carlos Varela, el pasado 1 de julio, la vicepresidenta cubana, Gladys Bejerano, expresó “el interés” de la isla de participar en el encuentro continental.

Hincapié aclaró que todavía no se ha cursado ninguna invitación oficial, que ello se empezará a hacer en noviembre próximo, porque se está trabajando aún en la agenda del encuentro.

FORMALLY WILL BE INVITED CUBA TO VII OAS MEETING.

The next Summit of the Americas will be held between the first and second week of next May and Cuba in Panama will be invited to participate formally reported the Panamanian Vice President and Foreign Minister Isabel De Saint Malo de Alvarado.

From Saint Malo added that “we are working to make the summit a success and participation at the highest level of all countries.”

Meanwhile, Panama’s Vice Foreign Minister Luis Miguel Hincapie said in the same meeting that during the inauguration of President Juan Carlos Varela, on 1 July, the Cuban vice president, Gladys Bejerano, expressed “interest” of the island to participate in the continental event.

Hincapie said that has not been completed yet any official invitation, which it will begin to do in November, because he is still working on the meeting agenda.
