El objetivo de la visita es “promover las virtudes de una Internet libre y abierta”.
14YMEDIO, La Habana | Junio 28, 2014- Durante dos días varios representantes del gigante Google, incluyendo a su presidente, hicieron una visita oficial a Cuba. Con el objetivo de “promover las virtudes de una Internet libre y abierta”, cuatro conocidos rostros de la empresa norteamericana tuvieron encuentros con el sector oficial y también con la escena alternativa dedicada a la tecnología y al mundo digital.
Jared Cohen, Brett Perlmutter, Dan Keyserling y Eric Schmidt, este último presidente de Google , se encontraron con jóvenes de escuelas politécnicas y realizaron este sábado una visita guiada a la Universidad de Ciencias Informáticas (UCI). En la noche del pasado viernes también contactaron con los redactores y periodistas de nuestro diario digital 14ymedio.
La visita llevó meses de preparación y sería la primera vez que una representación de Google llega a La Habana para hablar de tecnología y acceso a Internet. En 2013, Erich Schmidt había mostrado su deseo de viajar a la Isla en una entrevista con el diario The Wall Street Journal. En ese momento aseguró que le gustaría visitar la Isla para promover la libre circulación de pensamiento por vía de internet y recalcó que Cuba estaba “en el tope de la lista” de sus prioridades.
Durante el programa oficial, los visitantes pudieron constatar el deseo de los jóvenes de lograr un acceso más abierto a la red. Se sintieron también animados por el potencial tecnológico e informático que tiene la Isla, aunque muy limitado en estos momentos por los problemas de conectividad a Internet.
Desde 2011 quedó instalado un cable de fibra óptica entre Cuba y Venezuela que facilitaría el acceso a Internet. Tres años después de terminada la instalación del cable, todavía no se ha habilitado un servicio de acceso doméstico a la red de redes y una hora de conexión desde un local público, cuesta un tercio del salario mensual.
Una esperanza que guardan muchos cubanos, radica en la posibilidad de conectarse a través del proyecto de globos de Google que brindará Internet a varias zonas del planeta. Sin embargo, la instalación de uno de esos globos pasa por el beneplácito y autorización de las autoridades locales, algo difícil de lograr en el caso cubano.

14YMEDIO, Havana | June 28, 2014 – For two days, several representatives of the giant Google, including its president, made an official visit to Cuba. With the aim of “promoting the virtues of a free and open Internet,” four known faces of the American company had meetings with the public sector and the alternative scene dedicated to technology and the digital world.
Jared Cohen, Brett Perlmutter, Dan Keyserling and Eric Schmidt, chairman of Google latter, they found youth polytechnics and made Saturday a tour of the University of Information Sciences (UCI) visit. On Friday night also contacted the editors and reporters of our blog 14ymedio.
The tour took months of preparation and would be the first time a representation of Google arrives in Havana to discuss technology and Internet access. In 2013, Erich Schmidt had shown his desire to travel to the Island in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. At that time he said he would like to visit the Island to promote the free flow of thought via internet and noted that Cuba was “at the top of the list” of priorities.
During the official program, visitors were able to see the desire of young people to achieve a more open network access. Also felt encouraged by the technological and computer potential of the island, although very limited right now by Internet connectivity problems.
From 2011 he was installed a fiber optic cable between Cuba and Venezuela to facilitate access to the Internet.
