La competencia en el mercado de los viajes a Cuba en el Aeropuerto Internacional de Tampa (TIA) ha sacado del juego a una de las tres compañías de flete de vuelos hacia y desde la isla
Island Travel & Tours Ltd , que ha estado cubriendo el itinerario tres veces por semana, anunció que va a suspender su servicio aéreo de Tampa a Cuba, y que el último vuelo en el futuro inmediato será este miércoles, reporta el diario Tampa Bay Times.
La terminal aérea tampeña opera ocho vuelos semanales hacia y desde la isla. Con la retirada de Island Travel & Tours quedarían sólo cinco vuelos a la semana. Su propietario, Bill Hauf, culpa por los problemas de su compañía a la recién llegada Cuba Travel Services Inc. “Ellos decidieron destruir el mercado”, aseguró Hauf .
La compañía con sede en California, también conocida por sus siglas CTS, entró en el mercado de Tampa en diciembre, y fleta vuelos a Cuba los jueves y domingos. El gerente general de CTS, Michael Zuccato, negó que estén socavando el mercado. “Creo que estamos ofreciendo vuelos a un precio que es justo y equitativo para los viajeros”, dijo
Hauf recordó que acostumbraba cobrar 449 dólares por un boleto de ida y vuelta, con lo que –según dijo– apenas recuperaba su inversión. Pero se quejó de que CTS entró en el mercado cobrando $379. El último vuelo de Island el miércoles se ha vendido por $399. La tarifa del vuelo de CTS el jueves es $389.
ABC Charters Inc., la tercera compañía que vuela a Cuba desde Tampa, no se ha sentido afectada por la guerra de precios desatada por CTS, según dijo al Tampa Bay Times su presidenta, Tessie Aral . “Sea cual sea su estrategia, no ha afectado a mi negocio”.
CTS y ABC Charters negaron que planeen añadir más vuelos de Tampa a Cuba. Pero las compañías de fletes suelen añadir vuelos en el verano, cuando más cubano-americanos viajan durante las vacaciones escolares en EEUU.
Los vuelos a Cuba han sido un éxito para el TIA desde 2011, cuando ese aeropuerto se sumó a la entonces selecta lista de los que contaba con autorización del gobierno estadounidense para cubrir la ruta.
De octubre pasado hasta abril de 2014, TIA informó que el número de personas que utilizaron el aeropuerto para viajar a Cuba se elevó en un 45 por ciento respecto al mismo período anterior, con 34.358 pasajeros.
