COMITÉ DEL SENADO DE EE.UU aprueba proyecto sobre sanciones a Venezuela

El Comité de Relaciones Exteriores del Senado de Estados Unidos aprobó este martes un proyecto de ley que contempla sancionar a funcionarios venezolanos por la crisis que vive el país desde hace más de tres meses, según le confirmó a BBC Mundo la oficina del senador demócrata Robert Menéndez, presidente del comité.
La aprobación del panel significa que el proyecto será ahora considerado por el pleno del Senado.
Antes de la votación, Menéndez dijo que el proyecto contempla penas “contundentes” contra miembros del gobierno de Nicolás Maduro que “han aterrorizado a grandes segmentos de la población con una impunidad inquebrantable”.
Menéndez agregó que la legislación también autoriza US$15 millones para “defender los derechos humanos, apoyar a la sociedad civil democrática y fortalecer el cumplimiento de la ley”.
Según explica el corresponsal de BBC Mundo en Washington, Thomas Sparrow, esta aprobación se suma al visto bueno que le dio la comisión equivalente de la Cámara de Representantes a un proyecto de ley para sancionar las violaciones de los derechos humanos en las protestas que han dejado más de 40 muertos.
El corresponsal de BBC Mundo agrega que estos son los primeros pasos legislativos en el debate sobre las penalidades a funcionarios venezolanos y no está garantizado que se conviertan en sanciones como tal.
El gobierno de Estados Unidos ha tenido una reacción cautelosa sobre el tema y ha dicho que las sanciones podrían tener un efecto “contraproducente” y que hay que calcular el momento más apropiado para imponerlas.

The Foreign Relations Committee of the U.S. Senate Tuesday approved a bill to penalize Venezuelan officials contemplated by the crisis in the country for more than three months ago , according to the BBC confirmed the office of Sen. Robert Menendez , committee chairman.
The adoption of the panel means that the project will now be considered by the full Senate .
Before the vote , Menendez said the project provides ” strong ” sanctions against members of the government of Nicolas Maduro who ” have terrorized large segments of the population with unwavering impunity.”
Menendez said the legislation also authorizes $ 15 million for ” defending human rights , support democratic civil society and strengthen the enforcement of the law.”
Explains the BBC correspondent in Washington, Thomas Sparrow , this approval is in addition to the approval that gave the equivalent committee of the House of Representatives a bill to punish violations of human rights in the protests that have left more than 40 dead .
BBC correspondent adds that these are the first steps in the legislative debate on penalties to Venezuelan officials and is not guaranteed to become as such sanctions .
The U.S. government has taken a cautious reaction on the issue and said that sanctions could have a ” backfire ” effect and to impose the most appropriate time to compute.
