DESTACADAS PERSONALIDADES estadounidenses piden al Presidente otra actitud hacia Cuba.
Un grupo de 44 funcionarios gubernamentales estadounidenses, entre los que se encuentran el exdirector nacional de Inteligencia de George W. Bush, John Negroponte, y el excomandante supremo de la OTAN James Stavridis, han pedido al presidente del país, Barack Obama, un cambio de actitud hacia Cuba.
En una carta abierta al presidente estadounidense, que ha sido divulgada este lunes, han señalado que la Casa Blanca debería comprometerse a “discusiones serias” con el Gobierno cubano sobre temas humanitarios y de seguridad, y han pedido que entregue permisos de viaje a todos los estadounidenses que quieran visitar Cuba, así como respaldar más a la sociedad civil en la isla.
De la misma forma, los exfuncionarios han recordado que según un sondeo publicado el pasado mes de febrero “la mayoría de los estadounidenses favorece que se moderen las sanciones a Cuba, que han estado vigentes por cinco décadas”. Para ello, enumera medidas que, según los firmantes, están dentro de la autoridad ejecutiva del presidente y no requieren de la aprobación del Congreso.
Las recomendaciones están diseñadas para aprovechar lo que la carta denomina como una “ventana de oportunidad” creada por las reformas en curso en La Habana para reducir el control estatal en algunas áreas económicas y permitir la creación de pequeñas empresas privadas.
La reducción de las restricciones estadounidenses sobre viajes y actividad financiera en Cuba ayudaría a “profundizar los cambios ya en curso para dar mayor libertad a organizaciones privadas e individuos para que sirvan directa e indirectamente como catalizadores de un cambio significativo en Cuba”, según añade la misiva.
Finalmente, la carta declara que cualquier conversación con el Gobierno cubano debería ser usada como “palanca” para ayudar a asegurar la liberación del contratista estadounidense encarcelado Alan Gross, que cumple una condena de 15 años en prisión por intentar instalar conexiones de Internet ilegales en la isla.

A group of U.S. government officials, including those who are former director of National Intelligence George W. Bush , John Negroponte and former commander of NATO supreme James Stavridis, has asked the president, Barack Obama , a change attitude towards Cuba .
In an open letter to the U.S. President , which was released Monday , have said the White House should engage in ” serious discussions ” with the Cuban government on humanitarian and security issues , and asked to deliver travel permits to all Americans wishing to visit Cuba , as well as more support for civil society on the island.
Likewise , former officials recalled that according to a survey published last February, ” most Americans favor sanctions on Cuba , which have been in place for five decades moderate ” . The recommendations are designed to take advantage of what the letter called a ” window of opportunity ” created by the ongoing reforms in Havana to reduce state control in some economic areas and allow the creation of small private companies.

Finally, the letter states that any conversation with the Cuban government should be used as a ” lever ” to help secure the release of jailed U.S. contractor Alan Gross, who is serving a sentence of 15 years in prison for attempting to install illegal Internet connections in island.
