“In the early hours of Monday died in Havana Daniel Diaz Torres, highlighted and Cuban-winning filmmaker, a product of a painful disease,” he said in reference to cancer CubaDebate, AFP reported.
Diaz Torres began his work as a documentary film in 1975, and between 1977 and 1981 he made nearly a hundred editions of the Latin American ICAIC News.
In 1990 he filmed of Alice in Wonderland, a political satire of Cuban society, whose projection caused tensions in theaters in Havana in 1991, where he was shown briefly.

He was also author of the films also Quiéreme and see (1995), Kleines Tropicana (1997), Becoming Swedish (2000), Way to Eden (2007), Lisanka (2009), and Ana’s film, his most recent work.
Diaz Torres, who throughout his life he won many prizes in international festivals, working since 1986 at the International School of Film and Television in Havana, said CubaDebate.
He was also member of the Latin American filmmakers and founder of the Council of the Foundation of New Latin American Cinema.

El cineasta Daniel Díaz Torres, que en 1990 dirigió la controvertida sátira política Alicia en el pueblo de Maravillas, falleció este lunes en La Habana a los 64 años, informó el sitio oficialista Cubadebate.cu.
“En la madrugada de este lunes falleció en La Habana Daniel Díaz Torres, destacado y multipremiado director de cine cubano, producto de una penosa enfermedad”, dijo Cubadebate en referencia al cáncer, reportó la AFP.
Díaz Torres comenzó su labor cinematográfica como documentalista en 1975, y entre 1977 y 1981 realizó casi un centenar de ediciones del Noticiero ICAIC Latinoamericano.
En 1990 filmó Alicia en el pueblo de Maravillas, una sátira política de la sociedad cubana, cuya proyección provocó tensiones en los cines de La Habana en 1991, donde se exhibió por poco tiempo.
También fue también autor de los filmes Quiéreme y verás (1995), Kleines Tropicana (1997), Hacerse el sueco (2000), Camino al Edén (2007), Lisanka (2009), y La película de Ana, su más reciente trabajo.

Díaz Torres, quien a lo largo de su vida obtuvo numerosos premios y menciones en festivales internacionales, trabajaba desde 1986 en la Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV de La Habana, dijo Cubadebate.
También era miembro del Comité de Cineastas de América Latina y fundador del Consejo Superior de la Fundación del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano.
