Fernandez left the game in the fifth inning with the score in their favor 3×1. El lanzador cubano José Fernández hizo historia con los Marlins de Miami en una jornada que dio para hablar de su talento superclase y temeridad desde el montículo.

Entró en los libros de Grandes Ligas a la 1:26 p.m. de este domingo, con una recta de 93 millas que el árbitro de home cantó strike.

Fernández debutó frente a los Mets de Nueva York, lanzando desde el Citi Field de la Gran Manzana. Su entrada en la mejor pelota del mundo ocurrió apenas ocho años después de una fuga marítima de Cuba con su familia, tras haberlo intentado en tres ocasiones anteriores.

Es la historia triunfal de otro que escapó con un sueño de Cuba para hacerlo realidad. No todos lo consiguen: algunos encuentran la felicidad en perseguirlo indefinidamente; otros se rinden antel el desafío. Pero Fernández lo ha logrado en un abrir y cerrar de ojos, con 20 años y un bono de $2 millones de dólares en el bolsillo.

La víspera, cuando se le preguntó si estaba nervioso de enfrentar en su debut a los bateadores de los Mets, la respuesta de Fernández fue aplastante:”No, no estoy asustado. No tengo miedo a nada. Lo único que me dio miedo estaba en la embarcación cuando escapé, o recibir un disparo cuando salté al agua. Después de eso, no tengo miedo de nada más”.

Fernández abandonó el juego en el quinto episodio con el marcador a su favor 3×1. Retiró a los 10 primeros bateadores a los que se enfrentó, permitió solo tres hits, ponchó a ocho -récord para un pitcher debuitante en la franquicia de los Marlins- y manejó a sus anchas un variado repertorio, con una curva indescifrable mezclándola con rectas que alcanzaron las 97 millas.

Es el pitcher más joven que abre un juego por los Marlins desde el surgimiento de la franquicia en 1993.

Estuvo a dos outs de anotarse el triunfo, pero relevo Cishek lo hizo muy mal y los Mets revirtieron el marcador y dejaron al campo al conjunto miamense con marcador de 4×3.

Pero eso no empaña para nada la espectacular demostración de Fernández, que figura en el puesto siete en la lista de los 100 mejores prospectos de Grandes Ligas.

Fue una jornada de cubanidad para los Marlins, pues por primera vez la alineación regular incluyó a dos jugadores nacidos en Cuba. Junto a Fernández comenzó el juego el torpedero santiaguero Adeiny Hechavarría, que bateó de 3-2 con una carrera anotada.
