APERTURA EN EL BEISBOL CUBANO ?
LA HABANA, Cuba, marzo, www.cubanet.org -Una carta de intención para retomar los topes anuales de beisbol entre selecciones de Cuba y Estados Unidos suscribieron Higinio Vélez, titular de la Federación Cubana de Beisbol y Paul Seiler presidente de Baseball America, en La Habana, el 20 de marzo.
La primera serie de cinco juegos tendrá lugar en el Estadio Latinoamericano de La Habana entre el 5 y 9 de julio, y se espera que en 2013 los deportistas cubanos viajen a Estados Unidos. El vicepresidente de la Federación Internacional de Beisbol (IBAF), el cubano Dr. Antonio Castro, indicó que las conversaciones con Seiler para recuperar esas competencias, paralizadas desde l996, comenzaron en el contexto de ese organismo internacional y pronosticó que la serie será un éxito. Reiteró que para Cuba será un evento excitante y punto de partida para la preparación del team cubano con vista al Clásico Mundial de 2013, remarcando la importancia de que se realice con un equipo de Estados Unidos. Además se pronunció porque Cuba busque “todas las fórmulas posibles” para que sus atletas “se enfrenten a beisbol de calidad y aumenten su nivel, se vuelvan cada día más competitivos y puedan brindarle a nuestro pueblo mayor felicidad.”
Días antes de la firma de la carta de intención, visitó La Habana una delegación encabezada por el señor Juan Francisco Coello, presidente de la Confederacion de Beisbol Profesional del Caribe, con el propósito de discutir el posible regreso de Cuba a la Serie del Caribe, que se efectúa anualmente con posterioridad a los campeonatos invernales de la región, con los equipos triunfadores en cada país. Lo acompañaban representantes de las ligas invernales de México, Puerto Rico, Venezuela y República Dominicana. Según explicó existe el deseo de que Cuba participe en el torneo que se realizará en Hermosillo, México, en febrero de 2013, donde probablemente también se incorpore un team de Corea del Sur.
Aunque la aceptación de esta oferta parece no estar decidida por las autoridades cubanas y la información de la prensa nacional sobre las conversaciones efectuadas ha sido limitada, el hecho de que la delegación fuera recibida, indica la posibilidad del reingreso de Cuba en la Serie del Caribe, lo que serviría para que nuestros atletas tuvieran topes con un beisbol de mayor calidad, cuando el deporte nacional muestra signos de debilidad y disminución del rendimiento, en particular por no tener los contactos suficientes con los avances que se están produciendo en otros países. A eso se añade la continua deserción de deportistas cubanos hacia el extranjero en busca de un mejor nivel de vida, poder desarrollar sus talentos y obtener un mayor nivel de reconocimiento para sus esfuerzos.
Indudablemente el regreso a los topes Cuba-Estados Unidos es un paso positivo, y si además se retornara a las Series del Caribe, de donde nunca debió irse nuestro país, sería otra medida correcta. Sin duda alguna estos serían pasos alentadores, pero aún insuficientes. Como señaló el Dr. Antonio Castro hay que utilizar “todas las fórmulas posibles” para que nuestro sistema deportivo se recupere, pero no solo en el beisbol. En primer lugar tiene que abandonarse la absurda prohibición a los deportistas para participar en torneos en el extranjero en calidad de profesionales, lo cual los ha obligado a abandonar el país en ocasiones con peligro para sus vidas. Sería justo además pedirles excusas por las descalificaciones que se han lanzado contra quienes se han marchado al exterior obligados por las circunstancias en procura de una vida digna.
A todos ellos ya debe permitírseles regresar para visitar sus familias y nuestra patria, o si lo desean volver a residir en la Isla con el mayor respeto y consideración. Los medios de comunicación deben dejar de ocultar sus éxitos y reportar sus triunfos con el mayor apoyo moral posible, mostrándolos como glorias nacionales y referencias para nuestros jóvenes. Si ellos desearan volver a jugar en Cuba, debería permitírseles, lo cual elevaría el nivel de nuestro deporte en general. Al igual que se hace en otros países, los equipos cubanos al competir en eventos internacionales deberían estar formados por atletas que compiten dentro y fuera del país. Asimismo, quienes finalizan sus carreras deportivas en el exterior tienen todo el derecho a reinsertarse en nuestra sociedad y sean reconocidas sus glorias. Es necesario que al mismo tiempo de mostrar a la juventud cubana los hechos relevantes de nuestros deportistas después de 1959, se resalte los aportes y proezas de personalidades en épocas más remotas.
Paralelamente el desarrollo del deporte tiene que descansar sobre bases realistas. Resulta necesario la búsqueda de fórmulas para que esta actividad pueda autofinanciarse en mayor medida, a lo cual hoy no contribuyen los dogmas y prejuicios existentes contra el profesionalismo. Para desarrollar el amateurismo y el deporte escolar con la calidad requerida hace falta financiamiento, y resulta evidente que la economía cubana no puede resolver este problema solo con cargo al Presupuesto Nacional en las condiciones actuales. No es un secreto que las instalaciones deportivas están en franco deterioro y las condiciones ofrecidas a los atletas de alto rendimiento no son las adecuadas, como han expresado algunos de ellos.
Por el camino actual no solamente seguirán reduciéndose los éxitos deportivos internacionales, sino que las posibilidades de niños y jóvenes para practicar deportes continuarán disminuyendo. Un cambio de mentalidad también es imprescindible en esta importante actividad de la vida nacional
