Cuba advances in a vaccine against cancer that promises to completely reduce solid tumors.
A Cuban vaccine against cancer has passed to its second phase of trial after throwing hopeful results in a group of 30 patients “with very limited life expectancy”. Five years after the study, some of the patients are still alive and at least four have seen their tumors reduced in their entirety.
According to the Juventud Rebelde newspaper on Friday, researchers from the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) of Havana are testing today the “Savax” therapeutic vaccine against solid tumors, “top priority” for the state group Biocubafarma.
Savax has already completed phase 1-B and is in phase two to study its impact on tumors of the ovaries and hepatocarcinomas (liver), said Dr. Gerardo Guillén Nieto, director of Biomedical Research at the institution.
“To reach this point, its effect was investigated in a small group of 30 patients in advanced stages of the disease with very limited life expectancies,” he explained.
According to the expert, almost five years after the first stage of the trial, “not only was the increase in life expectancy of these patients confirmed, some of which are still alive, but the total reduction of tumors in four of they”.
Despite the success in the study phase, for the complete application of the vaccine, “there are still many parameters that should be evaluated” by specialists and regulatory authorities, he specified.
Together with the “Savax”, the CIGB “works as a priority” in new formulations of Heberprot-P for this year, a successful therapy to treat diabetic foot ulcers and star project of Cuban biotechnology, registered in more than 20 countries .
According to the Doctor, they also list a synthetic peptide for the treatment of cardiac ischemia, a drug for rheumatoid arthritis and a treatment for cerebral ischemia.
Other vaccines of Cuban patent against cancer are CIMAVAX-EGF, against lung cancer, and “Heberferon”, for the treatment of skin cancer. The center has also developed effective vaccines against hepatitis B and meningitis.

Una vacuna cubana contra el cáncer ha pasado a su segunda fase de ensayo luego de arrojar resultados esperanzadores en un grupo de 30 pacientes “con muy limitadas expectativas de vida”. Cinco años después del estudio, algunos de los enfermos continúan vivos y al menos cuatro han visto reducidos sus tumores en su totalidad.
Según informó el viernes el periódico Juventud Rebelde, investigadores del Centro de Ingeniería Genética y Biotecnología (CIGB) de La Habana prueban hoy la vacuna terapéutica “Savax” contra tumores sólidos, “máxima prioridad” para grupo estatal Biocubafarma.
Savax ya concluyó su fase 1-B y se encuentra en fase dos para estudiar su impacto en tumores de ovarios y hepatocarcinomas (hígado), dijo al referido medio el Doctor Gerardo Guillén Nieto, director de Investigaciones Biomédicas de la institución.
“Para llegar a este momento, se investigó su efecto en un reducido grupo de 30 pacientes en estados avanzados de la enfermedad con muy limitadas expectativas de vida”, explicó.
De acuerdo con el experto, casi cinco años después de la primera etapa de ensayo, “no solo se constató el incremento de la expectativa de vida de estos pacientes, algunos de los cuales aún viven, sino la reducción total de los tumores en cuatro de ellos”.
A pesar del éxito en la fase de estudio, para la completa aplicación de la vacuna aún “son muchos los parámetros que deben evaluar” los especialistas y las autoridades regulatorias, especificó.
Junto al “Savax”, el CIGB “trabaja de manera prioritaria” en nuevas formulaciones del Heberprot-P para el presente año, una exitosa terapia para tratar las úlceras del pie diabético y proyecto estrella de la biotecnología cubana, registrado en más de 20 países.
Según el Doctor, también alistan un péptido sintético para el tratamiento de la isquemia cardiaca, un medicamento para la artritis reumatoide y un tratamiento para la isquemia cerebral.
Otras vacunas de patente cubana contra el cáncer son la CIMAVAX-EGF, contra el cáncer de pulmón, y el “Heberferon”, para el tratamiento del cáncer de piel. En centro también ha desarrollado efectivas vacunas contra la hepatitis B y la meningitis.
