When an elderly Havana wants to express maintaining full vitality and good health, they say: “I am like the cannon of the nine”. Thus, appealing to a tradition of over 200 years, leaves no doubt that he (or she) does not fail.
Indeed, every night, exactly at nine, a veteran firing a salvo from the Fortress of San Carlos de la Cabana, from where the entire landscape of the City of Havana dominates.
What has become the traditional cannon shot nine, began in the eighteenth century from this own Fortaleza fired a salvo at 6 in the morning to announce the opening of the city gates, which were closed at 9 the night. At that time, the small capital of the island was surrounded by a wall defining its limits; of that work are some stretches in what is now Old Havana, a World Heritage Site.
The complex defensive system that reaches the city then takes the shot to announce the neighbors time to close or open the gates in the wall or placing the chain that closed the harbor entrance. Since colonial times, the social life of Havana was organized from cannon.
It is curious that during 1942-l945, during the world war, the then government banned the firing of the cannon, among other arguments because German submarines could capture the location of the bay. The popular demand forced once finished the war could be restored tradition.

HABANA, EL CAÑONAZO DE LAS NUEVE PM.
Cuando un habanero entrado en años quiere expresar que mantiene plena vitalidad y buen estado de salud, suele decir: “Estoy como el cañonazo de las nueve”. Así, apelando a una tradición de más de 200 años, no deja lugar a dudas de que él (o ella) no falla.
En efecto, todas las noches, exactamente a las nueve, un veterano cañón dispara una salva desde la Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña, lugar desde donde se domina el paisaje total de la Ciudad de La Habana.
Lo que ha devenido en el tradicional cañonazo de las nueve, se inició en el siglo XVIII cuando desde esa propia Fortaleza disparaban una salva a las 6 de la mañana para anunciar la apertura de las puertas de la ciudad, que se cerraban a las 9 de la noche. En aquel entonces la pequeña capital de la Isla estaba rodeada por una muralla que definía sus límites; de aquella obra quedan algunos tramos en lo que hoy es La Habana Vieja, Patrimonio de la Humanidad.
El complejo sistema defensivo que alcanza la ciudad posteriormente, asume el disparo para anunciar a los vecinos el momento de cerrar o abrir las puertas de la muralla o la colocación de la cadena que cerraba la entrada del puerto. Desde épocas coloniales, la vida social de los habaneros se organizaba a partir del cañonazo.
Es curioso que durante 1942-l945, en plena guerra mundial, el gobierno de entonces prohibió el disparo del cañonazo, entre otros argumentos porque los submarinos alemanes podían captar la ubicación de la bahía. El reclamo popular obligó a que una vez terminada la contienda bélica se restituyera la tradición.
