EL ESCAPE DEL PELOTERO YUÉN SOCARRÁS PONE UN NUEVO CLAVO AL ATAUD DE LA LIGA ELITE DE BEISBOL CUBANA. PHOTOS.

THE CUBAN PLAYER Yuén Socarrás, who had been dropped from the Ganaderos team that participates in the Cuban Baseball Elite League, became the first player to leave that tournament to leave the country and one of the more than 100, of any age, both active and retired, who left the Island in 2022.

Socarrás’s departure, announced by sports journalist Francys Romero on his personal blog, is a new nail in the coffin of an Elite League that was dead before it began and that the Cuban sports authorities have not been able to revive.

The success of the competition designed to become the greatest baseball spectacle in Cuba was already threatened since the National Commission (CNB) for this sport announced the names of the teams and dismissed the popular vote.

Over the weeks, not even the quality that the players are showing on the field, superior to what is observed during the National Series, has been able to capture the interest of the fans, especially now that the World Cup is underway. soccer.

Added to this are the long blackouts and the lousy food at the facilities where the athletes are staying overnight. These deficiencies are causing unrest that resulted in the request for the withdrawal of the right-hander from Sancti Spiritus Socarrás, about which the journalist Enrique del Pozo reported in DIARIO DE CUBA before the CNB made it official.

Socarrás had accumulated more than 15 seasons launched in Cuba and last winter he became the first player in the National Series to enter the Dominican Winter League, reports Romero on his blog. Also in 2022, he was part of the Cuba team that participated in the Harlem Interport Tournament in the Netherlands.

The Cuban pitcher also played in Mexico with the Pericos de Puebla and Olmecas de Tabasco in 2021. In 2019, he was in the Canadian Intercounty League with the Kitchener Panthers.

Romero says in his blog that the 35-year-old from Sancti Spiritus will now try to settle in the United States and then continue his career on independent circuits or in Mexico. He believes that the Cuban pitcher will not lack work if he is fit.

One of the main motivations for playing in the Elite League should be that the champion team will be the backbone of the Cuban team that will attend the V World Baseball Classic in March 2023.

However, the call of several Cuban emigrants for the Classic is another factor that is affecting the motivation of the players. According to what an active athlete who asked to remain anonymous told DIARIO DE CUBA, many feel their positions in the national team are threatened after having “complied” with the authorities by never leaving the country, an action for which they were criticized for years and injured those who could now displace them.
