Leopoldo Augusto Fernández Salgado nació en Jagüey Grande, Provincia de Matanzas, el 26 de diciembre de 1904, pasando su infancia, adolescencia y primera juventud en Güines. Actor cómico de extraordinario talento con una dilatada trayectoria en el teatro, la radio y la televisión cubana antes del comunismo.
Leopoldo Fernandez también conocido por su personaje ficticio José Candelario “Tres Patines”, fue su creador en el programa de radio y televisión “La Tremenda corte”, que todavía se transmite en radio y CD, VHS y DVD.
A temprana edad, la familia se mudó de Güines a La Habana. Dejó la escuela para trabajar y ayudar a su familia desde que era joven. Él entregó pan; después, fue telegrafista, tabaquero y adivino hasta que en 1926 fundó una compañía de teatro con algunos amigos. En ese mismo año lo contratan para una gira nacional con Blanquita Gómez. Al final de la gira, regresa a su ciudad natal para reunirse con su compañía, y viaja a La Habana, donde se encuentra con Candita Quintana, Federico Piñero, Alberto Garrido y Mimí Cal, quien sería la Nananina de la tremenda corte y quien fue su esposa por dieciseis años.

TRIUNFO EN SU CARRERA ARTISTICA
Llegó a la cúspide con “La Tremenda Corte”, un programa estrenado en 1941, cuyo éxito sigue siendo hoy. También fue el creador del personaje ‘Pototo’ que apareció en The Show of Cutipín y Cutipón para televisión. El personaje del Sr. Judge, conocido como La tremenda corte y Filomeno, fue magistralmente representado por Aníbal de Mar. Leopoldo y Aníbal también desarrollaron una carrera como cantantes de humor, acompañados por la Orquesta Melodías de los años cuarenta.
En 1959, después del triunfo de la Revolución Cubana y la caída del régimen del dictador Fulgencio Batista, fue exiliado de Cuba. Llegó a México y luego a Puerto Rico, participó en teatro, televisión y cine. Luego fue a la ciudad de Miami, donde continuó su carrera en el teatro.
En 1963 se mudó a Panamá donde trabajó en radio y televisión. En 1969 pasó una temporada en Perú y creó para la televisión ‘Guardia Trespatines’, una serie patrocinada por Panamericana Televisión (Lima) que trabaja junto a Antonio Salím.

Murió el 11 de noviembre de 1985 en Miami, pero no antes de regresar a México, donde en Monterrey el XEFB lanza el tremendo corte en los años sesenta (haciendo tanto el papel protagónico como los guiones del programa), con gran éxito, lo que lo hace todo América Latina, y que la U de Veracruz, de la ciudad de Veracruz, con tres transmisiones diarias, todavía se transmite en la estación de radio XEU en Aguascalientes, la estación XEBI 88.7 FM transmite diariamente a las 12:40 pm el programa.
Su chispa cómica natural, verdadero experto en hacer reír a la gente, insertando sus divertidísimas improvisaciones contra Nananina, fue un símbolo de su época en la época feliz de Cuba. Luego vendrían Pototo y Filomeno, también con Aníbal de Mar, ocupando un largo período en la era de la televisión libre cubana.
En su vida privada fue un hombre serio, mesurado, elegantemente vestido, un verdadero demócrata que lo hizo dejar su país natal en 1962 residiendo en Miami donde realizó largas temporadas teatrales, viajando también a Nueva York, Los Ángeles y otras ciudades de Estados Unidos, así como Puerto Rico, República Dominicana, México, Centro y Sudamérica.
En el año 2001 aparece en la Television Cubana el programa ‘Jura decir la verdad’ creado por Ulises Toirac, luego del intento fallido de realizar un remake más directo de ‘La tremenda corte’ que fue negado por los directivos de la televisión nacional. Ya en el 1998 esos mismos creadores habían conseguido insertar un sketch con los mismos personajes, en el programa ¿Y tú de qué te ríes?, también a modo de homenaje, pero no fue posible concretarlo más tarde en un programa habitual. Su personaje principal, Chivichana (una especie de patineta rústica de niños cubanos), conserva mucho del estilo clásico de Trespatines de Leopoldo Fernández, asi, sin quererlo hacer ver, es un ogligado aunque silencioso homenaje al fallecido Cómico Cubano.
