Cuando salió de la cama a la hora de costumbre nada hacía avizorar el dramático desenlace de la jornada. Tras el desayuno, el ex canciller cubano —ocupó la Secretaría de Estado en el gabinete del dictador Gerardo Machado— hizo y atendió varias llamadas telefónicas y recibió en la sala de armas de su palacete de San Miguel y Ronda, aledaño a la Universidad, que había vuelto a ocupar a su regreso del exilio, a las personas que tenía citadas.
Poco antes de la una de la tarde subió a cambiarse. Almorzaría con una importante figura de la llamada Ciencia Cristiana, de paso por La Habana, a la que su esposa había invitado, y una vez concluida la comida, que esperaba no se extendiese demasiado, participaría, al igual que en los días anteriores, en la sesión correspondiente de la Convención Constituyente para la cual había sido electo, pese a su pasado machadista, y que sesionaba en el Capitolio. Pero Orestes Ferrara y Marino no llegaría esa tarde al Palacio de las Leyes. El auto de alquiler que lo transportaba fue tiroteado desde otro vehículo en marcha y los balazos que impactaron su cuerpo lo pusieron al filo de la muerte.
SUCEDIÓ ASÍ..
.. El almuerzo con el representante de la Ciencia Cristiana se prolongaba demasiado. El inicio de la sesión del día estaba marcado para las tres de la tarde, y Ferrara, puntual por hábito, se resistía a llegar fuera de hora. Fue entonces que decidió despedirse de su invitado en lugar de esperar que su invitado se despidiera. Al abandonar el comedor, un sirviente le comunicó que el doctor Cortina había telefoneado con el ruego de que lo esperara para acudir juntos al Capitolio. Sabiéndolo impuntual, pidió al sirviente que dijera al amigo y colega cuando llegara que no había podido esperarlo. Pidió con urgencia su automóvil, y el chofer le dijo que el vehículo no tenía gasolina. Decidió Ferrara no discutir, al menos en ese momento, lo extraño de la situación y ordenó que llamaran a un taxi. Al subir al automóvil dijo al taxista que tenía prisa. Le indicó que ganara la calzada de Infanta, doblara a la izquierda en San Rafael y avanzara hasta el Capitolio. El policía que lo acompaña desde su elección se sentó al lado del chofer. Ferrara ocupó el lado izquierdo del asiento trasero y su secretario se sentó a la derecha.
Recuerda Ferrara en su libro Una mirada sobre tres siglos: «A por pocos metros de rodar por San Rafael oí el ruido de un auto que frenaba con violencia para dar una vuelta inesperada, y casi al mismo tiempo descargas repetidas de ametralladoras o escopetas largas. Un auto desfilaba a la izquierda haciéndonos víctimas de sus disparos. Lo primero que vi fue el cráneo abierto del pobre chofer, que bajo el sol me hizo el efecto de un crisol en ebullición. El automóvil asaltante hizo las descargas desde atrás y rodó rápido a nuestro lado izquierdo. Yo me incliné hacia un lado y saqué mi revólver, pero cuando pude haber hecho uso de él, los asaltantes estaban ya muy lejos…».
El auto, libre de todo control, siguió su marcha San Rafael abajo hasta que un joven vigoroso que presenciaba la escena subió al vehículo y lo frenó. El policía que desde días antes tenía la encomienda de defender al delegado a la Constituyente se alejó del lugar del suceso en busca de ayuda. Ferrara creía haber salido ileso; solo sentía un «toquecito» en la parte alta de la espalda.
No aparecía la policía, pero el lugar se fue llenando de vecinos. Algunos automovilistas detuvieron sus vehículos. Alguien se ofreció para conducir al hospital al astuto político. Ferrara se negó. Alegó no estar herido, pero los que lo rodeaban lo convencieron de lo contrario. Empezaba a sentir, en efecto, la espalda mojada. Tenía dos balas alojadas sobre la tercera costilla, tres en el hombro izquierdo, otra en la parte más alta de la espina dorsal y otras más diseminadas aquí y allá, en lugares del cuerpo que parecían peligrosos, pero que la naturaleza, benévola, pudo detener como en situación de espera.
Lo hicieron subir a un automóvil y tres o cuatro de los jóvenes que presenciaron el hecho se prestaron a acompañarlo hasta el hospital de Emergencias, pero no entraron con el herido a la casa de salud. Ferrara, que no llevaba dinero suelto, dio un peso al chofer por la carrera, pero el hombre se negó a aceptarlo y le deseó buena suerte.
La noticia corrió como la pólvora. María Luisa, la esposa, se enteró cuando ya lo sabía la familia de Ferrara en Nápoles. Su cuñada italiana tenía la radio abierta cuando la programación se interrumpió para informar que el doctor Orestes Ferrara había muerto en una calle de La Habana.
Pronto el hospital se colmó de amigos y correligionarios. Llegaron a la instalación sanitaria casi todos los delegados de la Convención Constituyente. No demoró en hacer acto de presencia el Presidente de la República y el coronel Batista envió un caluroso mensaje. Lo operarían en el Hospital Militar de Marianao. La bala que se le alojó en el cuello se la sacarían, años después, en España. Ferrara demoraría dos meses en volver a la Constituyente.
¿QUIEN FUE?
Como casi todos los atentados perpetrados en Cuba entre 1933 y 1944, y luego durante los mandatos auténticos de los presidentes Grau y Prío (1944-52) la agresión a Ferrara quedó en el misterio. No se halló al culpable.
Muchos años después, en Miami, el ex general Manuel Benítez, jefe de la Policía Nacional cubana, dijo a Max Lesnik, director entonces de la revista Réplica —y así lo contó Lesnik a este escribidor—, que el autor del ataque fue Emilio Tro, que andando el tiempo, luego de su regreso de la II Guerra Mundial, en la que combatió como parte del ejército norteamericano, fundaría la Unión Insurreccional Revolucionaria (UIR) y encontraría la muerte en los llamados sucesos de Orfila, en septiembre de 1947.
Dijo Benítez que el coronel Batista supo del papel de Tro en el atentado a Ferrara y quiso quitárselo del medio. Mandó a decirle con Benítez, que no se le escondiera porque lo encontraría y le ofreció un pasaje para Estados Unidos, la posibilidad de hacerse un pasaporte y diez mil dólares para gastos. Precisaba Benítez en su conversación con Lesnik un hecho que habla de la honestidad de Tro. Decía Benítez: «Debo decir, en honor a la verdad, que Tro aceptó el pasaje y los papeles para el pasaporte, pero rechazó el dinero… Diez mil dólares que, ¡mira!, me los metí yo en el bolsillo».

That the 1st . March could have been like any other day in the life of Orestes Ferrara and Marino. When he got out of bed at the usual time nothing foresaw that dramatic climax of that day.
