CUBA: THE PAST BEFORE US.
CUBA: Qué hacer con el pasado que nos espera será un tema de sumo interés cuando la irreprimible biología haga su voluntad sobre la tierra. No es poco Pasado más de medio siglo de encarnizadas pendencias. Y si a ello sumamos una larga cadena de memorias del Batistato —protagonistas ya fallecidos, en asilos o al cuidado de sus familias—, procesar tanta información resulta, virtualmente, imposible.
Puede ser fácil visionar el Día Después. Una nueva clase, tecnocrática-militar, sin otro compromiso que retener el poder, hereda un sistema político-económico en bancarrota —excepto si se prepara la transición al verdadero mercado libre desde ahora, algo improbable pues llevaría en el caso de la Isla a una presumible pérdida del poder político. El régimen emergente tendría que tener mucha suerte para evadir un nuevo pacto social. Pero si la traición a los cubanos que piensan diferente se consolida por algunos países latinoamericanos, e incluso, por los norteamericanos —desgraciadamente, antecedentes hay— la nueva clase emergente en Cuba se legitimaría, y las libertades individuales quedarían conculcadas.
El pacto social, es decir, el concordato entre gobernados y gobernantes, deberá hacer algo con ese pasado si es que quiere ser mínimamente legitimo. Aquí, y es válido incluirlo en la ecuación, no habrá una salida viable, ni económica ni política sin la participación de los cubanos en el exterior, sea el exilio duro o el de lana fina.
Un probable escenario es no hacer nada con el pasado. Un borrón y cuenta nueva, pero sin borrón, la cuenta se queda. Es la opción de los culpables, de los victimarios de ambos bandos. En esa variante no hay reconciliación pues no hay admisión de responsabilidades, mucho menos rendir cuentas y aceptación de los hechos. Es una bomba de tiempo. Una especie de Ley de Punto Final con puntos suspensivos. La tragedia volverá a suceder más pronto que tarde.
Otro escenario es reeditar los Tribunales Revolucionarios, y poner por televisión una frenética muchedumbre gritando paredón a quienes, medio siglo antes, incitaron los fusilamientos. Esa es la opción —entendible— de las víctimas, atrapadas aun en su dolor. Pero en más de medio siglo de gobierno será difícil identificar a alguien que no haya tenido por palabra, obra u omisión, un mínimo de responsabilidad de la perpetuación del régimen. Aplicar una Ley del Talión, es decir, devolver el golpe en idéntica cualidad —es lo que significa Talis en latín— pondrá a víctimas y victimarios en la misma rinconera moral. La tragedia volverá a suceder pues las ahora víctimas serán los futuros victimarios.
Una tercera variante es la aplicada en Sudáfrica, y que, para ello, es necesario poseer líderes de la talla de Nelson Mandela y Desmond Tutu. Por suerte para nuestra patria, líderes de ese carisma hay unos cuantos en la Isla. Porque, ¿qué hacer con tanto dolor? ¿Cómo unir un país que jamás estuvo unido? ¿Cómo institucionalizar un pueblo cuya vida republicana es, acaso, un tercio de la vida vivida en regímenes autoritarios? La Comisión para la Verdad y la Reconciliación fue la respuesta de los sudafricanos. Un tribunal que no juzga sino oye. Un tribunal que no castiga sino que hace públicas las maldades. Un tribunal cuya única retribución es la aceptación de la responsabilidad de los inculpados y pide arrepentimiento. Un tribunal sin sanciones, pero que solicita a los victimarios alguna reparación por lo menos moral.
Esta tercera opción no suele gustar ni a víctimas ni victimarios, lo cual significa que pudiera ser la más acertada. Es probable que ese camino conduzca a la tan deseada reconciliación entre los cubanos. Para ello, ya ha sido dicho, quizás la biología deba hacer su función de barrido generacional. Aunque no siempre es asunto de edades.
Veamos:
Por estos días nos visitan en Miami antiguos jugadores de los Industriales. Crecí viendo dar jonrones a Armando Capiró —dicen que tuvo problemas en la cúspide de su carrera—, disfrutando electrizantes jugadas de Anglada —preso por no denunciar a un amigo— y sorprendido por la voluntad de hierro de un Lázaro Valle o del otro Lázaro, Vargas —ambos bocones y alguna vez sancionados. Me sentí orgulloso cuando Arocha y después el “Duque” decidieron quedarse y jugar en la Grandes Ligas. Y me sentí muy triste cuando hombres de los cuales se dice son buenas personas como Padilla y Javier Méndez, agredieron físicamente a un individuo cuyo delito fue saltar al terreno con un cartel en sus manos —algo que hicieron los revolucionarios años antes. Quién sabe qué repentino miedo sintieron los jóvenes peloteros cubanos al leer La Patria es de Todos.
Los industriales que viven en la Isla vienen para unirse a otros resientes en Miami, algunos como Agustín Marquetti, exmiembro del Ministerio del Interior. Pero mientras escribo estas líneas no hay terreno para jugar a la pelota, al menos no en Miami. En sus declaraciones iniciales, los industriales de la Isla han mostrado respeto y asombro al conocer de primera mano el verdadero rostro de la mayoría del exilio cubano. El conflicto generado por los Industriales pudiera ser una muestra a escala, pequeñísima, del pasado que nos espera. Si no podemos ponernos de acuerdo para recibir y conversar con unos pocos exdeportistas…
