TODAY: Cuban Bloggers inaugurated “Festival Click” in Havana

Licencia Creative Commons- Blogueros Cuban dissidents, including the award-winning Yoani Sanchez, on Thursday inaugurated the “Festival click” in Havana, three days to promote the use of the internet to discuss the problems of the island, amid distrust of the authorities .

Braving the rain, fifty people attended the opening of the Festival, a meeting supported by a group blogger from Spain and will have forums on new information technologies and the use of social networking sites.

“This is a festival where we will talk about all kinds of technology, is mixed, is diverse, plural, is inclusive. It is a festival of technology to see how these gadgets semimágicos will help us become better citizens,” said Sanchez the opening of the meeting in a house by the sea in the Miramar neighborhood.

“We have the desire to sit down and talk about technology (…) because someone has to start projecting a 2.0 Cuba,” the blogger, using a computer term.

At the Festival attends the Spanish Jose Luis Antunez netizen, Blog Event Group of Spain (EBE), who said he was surprised by the technological limitations on the island.

“I was aware of the reality of life here, but was not aware of the technological limitations. It is a country with no internet at home,” Antunez said.

Few homes are connected to the network in Cuba because the communist government favors its “social use” citing technical limitations and economic consequences of the U.S. embargo, in force since 1962.

Anyone can access the Internet in hotels paying six dollars per hour, price unaffordable for most Cubans, who earn $ 19 per month on average. Dissidents enter the network at the Interests Section of the U.S. or some European embassies in Havana.

A fiber optic submarine cable was laid from Venezuela between 2010 and 2011, at a cost of $ 70 million, to expand the capacity of Internet connection on the island, which has no broadband.
