Born in La Vibora barrio of the capital Havana in 1930, a writer who belongs to the so-called poets of the Revolution and is one of the finest examples of Spanish-American colloquialism.

Your role within revolutionary cultural politics often overshadow his work, which began early with the poems of From the beginning (1948-1949), who departed from the prevailing secrecy until then in Cuban poetry with a clear expression ironic that in some lines approached the colloquial. That tone is developed further in Praise, talks (1951-1955)

He began studying painting and architecture, but ended Humanities at the University of Havana (1948-52), where he later obtained a doctorate in Philosophy and Letters (1954).

However, for a critical sector, the best of the poetry of Retamar text is in its most intimate and less programmatic, such as those in whom it may concern A (1970). Besides being a poet, Retamar is also known as controversial essayist and a defender of orthodoxy Castro, of what is good sign his book Caliban, 1971, where it attacks the anti-revolutionary position of some contemporary authors such as Carlos Fuentes. Your task in front of the Casa de las Americas corroborates this point.
